Social Media

While I worked at the National MS Society, even the youngest supporters of the organization were still largely unfamiliar with the social networks that were just becoming popular. So instead of using Facebook, we directed the chapter’s fundraisers and clients to msillinois.org, where they could use personalized web pages, write on mini-blogs, and upload and share photos.

During my time at National PTA, social media use rose dramatically across all demographics, and I worked with the marketing manager to establish a presence there for PTA and its leadership. I also launched the PTA blog with several posts under my own name, and worked extensively with the leadership on creating and maintaining their official Facebook and Twitter accounts.

I was even more heavily involved with social media at Willow Springs. With a great deal of enthusiasm for the project, I helped them launch the arts and culture blog, Bark (and remain a regular contributor there today). But my most immediate impact was in taking over their abandoned Facebook and Twitter accounts, simultaneously building a significantly larger audience for them and for Bark. I also created a Delicious account as a way to do good-will promotion on behalf of the writers published in the magazine, and established Willow Springs on Goodreads, enabling the magazine’s fans to share their excitement and opinions easily with friends.
